Hardwood
floor buffing or recoating
The screen and coat procedure
of hardwood floors does not require complete
refinishing. This procedure refreshes
the final appearance. Frequent applications
can eliminate the need for a complete
refinishing at a later date. Screening
prepares already finished floors to accept
another coat of finish. Without the screening
process, any new finishes are very likely
to peel off. For those with minor, worn
or dull looking floors this procedure
may be best suited. Minor surface scratches
can be removed but not ones that are deeper
into the finish or the material itself.
Ordinarily one coat is applied. Other
terms for this procedure include; buff
and topcoat or top coating.
When planning a screen
and coat, it becomes important to know
what kind of cleaners have been used on
the existing floor over the years, as
they will conflict with any new application.
Waxed type hardwood floors cannot be screened
and coated unless the wax is completely
removed. For those with newer floors,
it's a good idea to remember your cleaning
maintenance for future reference. For
this floor finish type, a new application
of wax and buffing will revitalize the
appearance and hide minor scratches.
Always use the manufacturers recommended
cleaners or refer to Bonakemi, the leader
in hardwood floor care products
Recoating a wood floor involves applying
a coat of finish on top of the existing
one. This procedure requires no sanding,
is relatively inexpensive, and takes only
a few hours to complete. The floor is
first screened with a buffer, which slightly
roughs up the surface so that the coat
of finish will adhere better. The coat
of finish is then applied.
Floors in California highly recommends
recoating your floor every few years.
(Between 3 to 7, depending on how heavily
they are used). Recoating your floor will
significantly extend the life of the hardwood
floor in general, and allow considerably
more time to pass before the wood floor
will need to be refinished again. Recoating
a wood flooring basically replaces the
top coat of finish as it wears down, before
the wood is exposed. Once the wood loses
its protection and is exposed it will
begin to turn gray, and will need sanding
in order to be restored.
The important thing to remember is to
use the right materials to clean the floor,
that is, either vinegar and water (see
maintenance information) or a commercial
wood floor cleaner. Many products, such
as Murphy’s Oil, will leave a residue
which will not allow recoating, because
the new coat of finish will not adhere
very well.
Wood floor
stain
A Wood stain, is a sub-category of paint,
consists of a pigment suspended in a "vehicle"
of solvent and binding agent (alkyd, linseed
oil, acrylic, polyurethane, lacquer, or
resin). It is formulated to impart or
transport the pigment into the pores of
the surface rather than creating a film
on top of the surface.
Stain is composed of the same three primary
ingredients as paint (pigment, solvent,
and binder) but is predominantly pigment
(or dye) and solvent with little binder.
Much like the dying or staining of fabric,
wood stain is designed to add color to
the substrate of wood and other materials
while leaving the substrate mostly visible.
Transparent varnishes or surface films
are applied afterwards. In principle,
stains do not provide a surface coating
or film. However, because the binders
are from the same class of film-forming
binders that are used in paints and varnishes,
some build-up of film occurs.
Adding satin to your floors, is not expensive
in fact is very affordable about $0.29
per sqft standard colors or $0.39 per
sqft custom colors, one thing you do have
to remember when you add stain to your
wood floors is that, the hardwood floor
refinish will take an extra 24 hours even
if the hardwood stain is fast dry, also
depends of the conditions inside the property,
you can choose form 17 standard wood stain
colors, or 9 custom wood stain blends.
Hardwood floor stain also get absorb by
the wood unevenly, because of the density
of some wood or the density of the wood
grain, so don’t expect that will look
perfectly evenly in all the area, also
remember as darker you go in the shade
of the wood stain, more chances you have
to see the age and imperfections of the
wood floors that you have.
